...was Inigo Calderon's debut for the Albion in a 2-1 win away at Walsall.

Could any of us have imagined then that he would go on to become one of the most popular, valued and committed players we've had here for a long, long time?

Whether in playing, coaching or some other behind the scenes role, here's to the next 5 years.

Good Lord... Calderon came in as competition to Gavin Hoyte and out of favour Andy Whing. How times have changed, eh?

When was it he was considering a move to Southampton?

According to Wiki:

Calderón's offer of a new contract at Brighton was withdrawn after he agreed to join League One rivals Southampton in May 2010. However, on 10 June, the player signed a new three-year deal with Brighton, with manager Gus Poyet claiming "Calde is a quality player and was always our first-choice right-back..."

When was it he was considering a move to Southampton?

At the end of the 09/10 season as he was initially only signed on a deal until the end of the season. Thankfully he saw sense and made the right choice.

Who was the other full back that debuted for us that day?...Brains gone....can't think of his name.

Wasn't that Marcos Painter at the start of his loan spell from Swansea?

May 2010.

But as the song goes

'...stayed with us in Sussex By the Sea,
because he turned down the scum from the St. Mary'.

Legend.

Thar day was the real start of the 'Gus way'. Two ball-playing fullbacks. Bet Calde wondered what he had let himself in for that day, with snow cleared off the pitch piled up on the touchline.

I remember it well. Glenn Murray opener and a spectacular overhead kick by Nick Forster. Bitterly cold day in which it definitely felt like we'd turned a corner. Little did we know our visit the following season would finish with us crowned as champions

It was bloody freezing that day and I think Walsall had not played at home for over four weeks due to the weather. There was snow all around the side of the pitch but you were right when I left after the game there was a definite feeling we are looking much better now.
