1) Bolton

On this day two years ago, Bolton had 7 points more than us now having played two games more than us. They missed out on the play-offs ONLY because they didn't beat Blackpool at home on the last day of the season.

1 Cardiff 27 19 57
2 Hull 27 8 49
3 Leicester 27 25 47
4 Palace 27 15 47
5 Middlesbrough 27 9 47
6 Watford 26 12 43
7 Millwall 27 4 41
8 Brighton 26 10 40
9 Forest 27 2 40
10 Burnley 27 1 39
11 Leeds 27 -6 38
12 Derby 27 1 37
13 Blackburn 26 2 36
14 Charlton 27 -1 36
15 Blackpool 27 4 34
16 Bolton 27 -1 33
17 Huddersfield 27 -12 33
18 Wolves 27 -6 32
19 Ipswich 27 -21 31
20 Birmingham 27 -9 30
21 Wednesday 27 -12 28
22 Peterborough 27 -13 25
23 Barnsley 27 -15 24
24 Bristol City 26 -16 22

2) Reading

They overhauled Southampton from this pitiful position on 1st Nov 2011 to win the title, never mind reach the play-offs.

1 Southampton 15 18 33
2 West Ham United 15 13 28
3 Middlesbrough 15 7 27
...
14 Blackpool 14 1 19
15 Millwall 15 2 18
16 Reading 15 0 18

By 12th Jan 2012, they had admittedly climbed to 39 points and become play-off challengers, but they actually finished on 89 points - 50 points in 21 games.

"Brighton are back, Brighton are back!" (BHA fans Vicarage road in 1990, Watford 0, BHA 1. David James in goal for Watford. We ended up at Wembley)

Palace also had a recent 'Phoenix from the Flames' style resurgence from a Championship relegation position did they not?

Ask yourself, did those teams have Championship quality strikers? Now look at what we have.

No chance of a playoff place, without genuine quality players being signed. Lower half of the table beckons imo, I'll settle for that tbh as I have no faith in us signing quality players in this window.

Nor have I to be honest - just putting it out there.

Although I would say that I didn't think much of Bolton in that season. And until Roberts arrived, Reading had the perma-shit, Simon Church leading the line.

Good questions - made me go and have a look. Much as I wish it weren't so I think we need to give up any lingering hopes
- only one team lower than 11th at this time of year has made the final top 6 in the last 5 seasons
- only the exceptional Newcastle / Leicester teams got anywhere near the points per game average we would need to get to 72 points

Which means we have a chance to make history

I tend to agree -we must not get carried away just yet. The last 3 away games could have gone either way and the strikers are still not scoring as they should. To be fair, give credit where it is due, and we DID win games which under SH we would surely have lost. The next two league games at home will tell us more -the home form hitherto has been dire and if we are genuinely "back" then we can expect two victories, or at least 4 points from 6. The situation up front is the most pressing.
