The Seagulls have the slight edge in the overall head-to-head record, with 23 victories compared to 21 for the Addicks, while 12 games have ended all square.
Albion have recorded some fine results away at The Valley in recent years and went on a three-match unbeaten run in this fixture between February 2010 and December 2012, before a 3-2 defeat to the Addicks the following year.
The very first meeting between the clubs came back in October 1921 in an old Division Three South fixture, when Charlton claimed a 1-0 win.

Charlton 2-2 Albion
Kazenga LuaLua rescued a point for Albion as they twice came from a goal down against Charlton at The Valley. The Addicks took the lead in the ninth minute when Lawrie Wilson got on the end of a cross from future Seagull Dale Stephens to head the ball past Tomasz Kuszczak. Craig Mackail-Smith brought Albion level prior to the half-hour mark after Michael Morrison miscued a header and the Scotland international fired a half-volley past Ben Hamer at his near post. Bradley Pritchard struck next for Charlton with his first goal of the season, when he reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the box and saw his effort beat Kuszczak. Substitute LuaLua was on hand just five minutes later to earn the Seagulls a share of the spoils with a free-kick, following a challenge on Ashley Barnes on the edge of the area. The Congolese midfielder rifled home with the aid of a deflection to earn a well-deserved point, but the Seagulls remained outside the play-offs following the match.

Charlton 0-4 Albion
Albion recorded an emphatic victory in South London on their way to the League One title. The visitors took the lead in the 26th minute as Elliott Bennett found Gary Dicker on the left of the area and his cross was fired home by Inigo Calderon at the far post. Glenn Murray added a second for the Seagulls just past the hour mark after capitalising on a poor backpass from Johnnie Jackson, and struck the ball home past Rob Elliot. Kazenga LuaLua killed the game off as a contest with a fierce 20-yard strike from a quickly taken free kick after 81 minutes, before Matt Sparrow added extra gloss to the scoreline in stoppage time when he headed home LuaLua’s cross.

Charlton 1-2 Albion
Albion moved out of the League One relegation zone with this superb victory over a high-flying Charlton side at The Valley. The hosts made a bright start to the match, with both Akpo Sodje and Therry Racon seeing their efforts cleared off the line, before Inigo Calderon gave Brighton the lead with a 20-yard strike. Some alert defending from Tommy Elphick prevented David Mooney from netting an Addicks equaliser, but it was Albion that struck again with a goal from distance, this time from Elliott Bennett with 12 minutes left on the clock. Sodje denied Peter Brezovan a clean sheet with a consolation goal in stoppage time, but the Seagulls claimed all three points and moved up into 18th in the table.
