Against Charlton Athletic
Brighton & Hove Albion succumbed to a heavy 5-3 defeat at the Goldstone Ground in the Second Division, with Alan Curbishley scoring twice for the visitors. Despite goals from Dean Saunders, Martin Keown and a Danny Wilson penalty, the leaky Seagulls defence shipped four second-half goals to hamper Albion’s promotion prospects. Although Charlton had to leave The Valley just after the 1985/86 campaign kicked off, it didn’t stop Lennie Lawrence’s team from clinching the runners-up spot by the end. That season, the Addicks squad included Steve Gritt, John Humphrey and Tony Towner. In the return fixture at Selhurst Park in February 1986, goals by Steve Penney and Dean Saunders secured Brighton a creditable draw. Albion eventually finished 11th.
