Whilst watching channel 4 ravings yesterday they was able to check what amounts of money was put on horses at what time ( they said £7,000 had been put on at 9/4) where they finding this info on line

Do they get this info from bookies direct, which is out of the public domain? Cannot imagine bookies want everyone to know how much has been staked on specific results/ outcomes.

Was it a case of a single person putting the £7k on? I always assumed they were told of it by the punter themselves...not sure how though!

I don't think there's ever been a formal process for reporting bets above a certain size.
Some big bets are reported via the starting price reporters, some are not. Those that are tend to be placed with the rails representatives of major firms like Ladbrokes etc, and may be down to the bookies laying off liabilities between themselves. The on-course market at all but the very biggest meetings is now just shadowing the Betfair market, which has far more money sloshing around in it.
