Chris Hughton arrives as Brighton & Hove Albion manager following a highly-impressive playing and coaching career.

The 56-year-old came through the youth ranks at Tottenham Hotspur, making almost 400 appearances for the North London club, and went on to win the FA Cup in 1981 and 1982, and the UEFA Cup in 1984.

Following his departure from White Hart Lane in 1990, he played for West Ham United and Brentford before announcing his retirement in 1993.

The former left-back also had a distinguished career at international level, winning 53 caps for the Republic of Ireland and was part of their Euro 1988 and World Cup 1990 squads.

Soon after announcing his retirement in 1993 he re-joined Tottenham Hotspur, and spent a total of 14 years coaching at the club, which included two caretaker spells in charge.

Hughton then moved to Newcastle United in February 2008, where he was originally appointed first-team coach working alongside Kevin Keegan, before being named caretaker manager the following September after Keegan’s departure.

He remained with the club during Joe Kinnear’s and Alan Shearer’s respective spells in charge and after another period as caretaker manager, he was given the job on a permanent basis in 2009 and led the Magpies back up to the Premier League at the first attempt in 2010.

Following his departure that December, Hughton headed to Birmingham in June 2011 and guided the club into the Europa League group stages, likewise the Championship play-offs.

At the end of the 2011/12 season, he was given permission to speak to Norwich City regarding their vacant managerial post and was appointed in June 2012.

After leading the side to a respectable 11th place in the Premier League in his first season, Hughton left the club in April 2014 before joining the Seagulls on New Year’s Eve 2014.[h=3]ALBION V brentford
