Brighton chief executive Paul Barber says the club have interviewed a number of candidates for the vacant manager’s job and are hopeful of naming a replacement for Sami Hyypia in the next few days.
Hyypia resigned from his post on December 22 and Nathan Jones has since taken temporary charge of the team, guiding Albion out of the Sky Bet Championship relegation zone with a 2-2 draw against Reading and a 2-0 win away to Fulham.
Former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood and ex-Newcastle and Norwich manager Chris Hughton have both been linked with the vacant role at the AMEX Stadium.
Barber has not confirmed they are in contention for the job but revealed chairman Tony Bloom has now joined the selection process.
“The chairman is back from Australia and is very much part of the process. Over the course of the next few days we expect to come to a fairly quick decision,” Barber told Sky Sports News HQ.
“We’ve been working down to a shortlist which we’re down to now. We worked from quite a long list and narrowed it down quickly because of the time of year we’re in at the moment.
“We certainly want someone in to contribute to the transfer window. We’ve got a big transfer window coming up and want one or two reinforcements into the squad to boost our squad as it stands and our league position as quickly as possible.
“We want someone with good experience of English football, the players we have in our squad and the players we’re up against.
“We are working through those interviews as we speak. We are talking to other people who have worked with the candidates, players who have played with them and players who may not have played with them but have come up against them.”
Barber also confirmed Jones is in the running to become Brighton boss on a permanent basis after impressing during his two games in temporary charge of the team.
“Of course he is in contention, he’s done a fantastic job,” added Barber.*“He’s very committed and knows the future of the club.”
