Brighton & Hove Albion’s under-21s were knocked out of the Barclays Premier League Cup following a 1-0 defeat to Charlton Athletic at the PHB Stadium.

*
Joe Piggot’s 80th minute penalty was enough to send the Addicks through to the last-16 after a closely-contested affair in Kent.
*
The game started in a lively fashion with chances for both sides, as Albion’s Chike Kandi shot over the bar before Piggot also saw his effort go off target for the hosts.
*
Piggot was involved in the thick of the action again after linking up well with Archie Edwards, but his cross was just missed by Ollie Maldoon inside the box.
*
The Londoners started the second half well and a free-flowing move resulted in an effort from Jack Munns which forced Seagulls keeper Christian Walton into a fine save.

Piggot continued to be a threat for the hosts and his header towards goal was narrowly deflected behind for a corner.
*
Albion rallied in the final 20 minutes and came close when Glen Rea saw his long-distance strike go wide, before the Republic of Ireland under-21 defender ended a slick Seagulls move with another off-target effort.*
*
But it was Charlton that scored the only decisive goal of the tie after Dylan Barnett brought Muldoon down in the area and Piggot converted the subsequent spot-kick past Walton.
*
The final ten minutes were rather frenetic, as Muldoon, Kadell Daniel and Danny Pappoe all entered the referee’s book for a fracas after a strong tackle on Jesse Starkey.
*
Simon Ireland’s side drove forward in a bid to send the tie into extra time, but the Addicks claimed victory and set up a meeting with Huddersfield Town in the next round.ALBION: Walton; Barry, Dallison, Pappoe, Barnett (Davis 83); Rea, Harris, Toko; Starkey, Kandi, Muitt. Subs not used: Smith (GK) Barclay, Wiltshire.
