Video file conversion help/advice please

I am trying to open some old video files taken around 8 yrs ago of nursery Nativity Play and Harvest Festival as I want to archive them on Flickr. Some are on CD, some on DVD, file extension types are .zl and .vob and I can't get them to open.

I am aware of various software packages out there that will help, any advice from those in the know on which are best/safest/cheapest/free or is there somethint already lurking within the bowels of Windows 8 to do this?

VLC player used to open most video files on a PV

Vob file is a DVD player file I belive. There are probably free online or software converters.

I have used handbrake to convert video files in the past. Does the job and claims to be able to read most formats.

I believe it is free.
