I went out and got the cinnamon sticks and other ingredients last week but still haven't bothered to brew up a batch... I have heard adding a nice bit of cognac/brandy to the mulled wine improves the flavour and over all experience dramatically though! :)

I have never been that impressed with mulled wine, Mulled Cider though is much better.

I know that it is not quite what you are asking but Lidl sell the German variety. At the Xmas markets in Germany, it is very popular and for an extra charge -you can have a "Schuss" added -a shot. Many go for Amoretto.

Mulled old ale works well, on occasion it's done with a hot poker straight from the fire

An old boy at the local pub laughs at the punters paying £5 per glass for mulled wine or cider. He just takes the hot poker from the open fire in the bar area and stuffs it into his pint of rough cider, ashes and all. Turns it into a spitting froth of muddy yellow-brown liquid, but he swears by it. Brilliant.
