Derby hold the upper hand in the overall head-to-head meetings with 19 victories compared to 13 for Albion, whereas the two sides have drawn on four occasions.
The very first game between Albion and Derby in the East Midlands came in February 1946, when the Rams triumphed 6-0 and 10-1 on aggregate in the FA Cup fifth round.

Craig Mackail-Smith’s strike was enough for Albion to claim all three points and maintain their push for the top six. The win was also Albion’s third win in four matches after a barren nine-game run without a victory. Mackail-Smith scored the decisive goal in the 13th minute after latching onto a pass from Inigo Calderon before firing a shot past Rams keeper Frankie Fielding. The Seagulls ended up missing out on the top six finishing in 10th, nine points behind sixth-placed Cardiff, while Derby finished 12th.

Albion secured a comfortable victory at the Baseball Ground following three second-half goals from Steve Penney, Alan Young and Gordon Smith. This was the side’s first season back in the second tier of English football following four consecutive seasons in the top flight and they secured a ninth-place finish. A John Shepherd brace and a strike from Frank Howard secured the win for Albion in their first-ever season in the second tier of English football. The result secured back-to-back league victories for the first time that season, as the Seagulls had a difficult start to life in the new division. Albion’s form improved considerably throughout the second half of the campaign, and they ended up finishing in a respectable 12th place, 13 points above relegated Grimsby Town.
