The West Londoners have the edge in the overall head-to-head record with 20 victories to Albion’s 17, while the two sides have shared just five draws.

The very first meeting between the two sides on the south coast came in November 1928, when the blue-and-white-stripes secured a 2-0 win in an old Division Two South fixture, and this weekend’s meeting is the first time in 18 years that the two clubs have met in any competition.

In what is now called the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, ten-man Albion came from behind twice to claim a thrilling 3-2 victory at the Goldstone. Nick Cusack headed home Darren Freeman’s cross on the half-hour mark before Albion drew level in first half stoppage time, when Craig Maskell scored with a strike from 25 yards out. Substitute Rob Scott restored the Cottagers’ lead with thirteen minutes remaining but Albion fought back again and levelled the scores ten minutes later as Paul McDonald scored from the penalty spot. The Seagulls were then reduced to ten men when Gary Hobson was sent off for a second bookable offence just before full time, but James Virgo scored with a fantastic strike from distance just two minutes into extra-time to send Albion through on the golden goal rule –the only golden goal in their history.

A brace from Paul Dickov, in his final game on loan from Arsenal, gave the Seagulls all three points in this Division Two clash at the Goldstone. The Scot gave Liam Brady’s side the lead after 26 minutes when he bundled home a shot from close range and added a second in the 51st minute when his deflected strike sailed into the back of the net. The Seagulls went on to finish 14th in Division Two, but Fulham endured a disappointing campaign and were relegated to Division Three, finishing in 21st, one point behind Blackpool.

Albion were beaten in this match at the Goldstone despite making a perfect start thanks to Danny Wilson’s goal inside the opening three minutes. Rod Braithwaite equalised for the visitors before Terry Connor re-established Albion’s lead just minutes after the restart. But the lead did not last long as the Cottagers struck twice more through John Dreyer and Chris Pike to give the West Londoners all three points. Despite the victory, Fulham finished bottom of the league and were subsequently relegated, while Albion ended up in 11th due a disappointing run of form after being in the mix for promotion for much of the campaign.[h=3]ALBION V fulham
