My wife & I have decided to just send cards at Christmas to family members, except our nephews where they will be spoilt of course.
People can buy what they want these days, instead of waiting for December.
Is this the way things are going with the commercialisation of Christmas, or 'we' just getting old?

My question was really that Christmas is not what it used to be, and am I being just a grumpy old b'stard?

It does tend to fade over the years, perhaps you could do with taking time off at that time of year? if you dont already....failing that do what i do and let the others do the work..

It's the hype that builds it into something it can never be . I see every advert break now has a xmas advert and this will slowly become every advert .

In many ways you are absolutely correct.

Generally speaking, if someone wants something they buy it - jumper, scarf, wine, album etc.

If they cannot afford it (tablet, phone, car, holiday) I sure as hell ain't gonna buy it for them!

Kids are different of course.

We haven't sent cards for last 3 years and give what we would have paid on cards and postage to charity.

We put together a short email and send it to everyone we know wishing them well etc .... all feels fine to me

You and me both. Christmas is for kids. Sending cards to everyone else is fine. Up the Bah Humbug brigade !!
