So. Just in 'a pub' and 2 gents (circa early 60's) have sat down on the table next to me each clutching a bottle of Budweiser. A bottle.
Why wouldn't they order a pint of something. As I write this they are going in for a second bottle each. I can't remember the last time I saw anyone drinking a bottle of beer in a pub. Let alone 2 at once. I felt the need to discuss this. Strange or not?

Not at all - and likely to happen more frequently these days. Some pubs opt to have just lager in their pumps, maybe with an ice-cold cider and ice-cold plastic 'beer' (won't name brands, but we know who they are) on offer as the alternative to lager options. In such circumstances, it's quite normal to ask what sort of real ale they have in bottles, and have one of those instead.

Bit puzzling why you'd do that for a Budweiser though - but there again, I don't drink lager. Perhaps it wasn't available on draft?

I blame that Mark Fowler off Eastenders, his fault this drinking straight from the bottle started.

It wouldn't be my choice but it wouldn't even if it was on tap. There is one pub in Huddersfeidl however that i will always buy bottles in as for some unknown reason the on tap Lager always tastes dodgy.

In a part time bar last night, football club only used a couple of times a week. NO REAL ALE! Had a choice of fizzy water on tap or bottle, both £3 so chose tap as more quantity. Still rubbish though.

The Southdown in Worthing seems to only specialise in bottles, has them cheaper than what's on tap, (ie 2 bottles cheaper than a pint)

It's bizarre. The last bottle I had was some Indian pale ale at a wedding in London last year at £8 for the privilege. These fellas are now in their 4th. 4 bottles of bud each. Very odd

Whilst I would rather have a bottle of J2O than Bud, I rarely drink anything other than bottled beers in pubs. I won't touch cooking lager such as Fosters, Carlsberg etc and have had too many crap pints over the years on draft to trust many pubs. I am predominately a lager drinker but I like a decent imported or craft lager. Luckily, most pubs now have at least one or two decent bottled lagers to choose from.

There are exceptions - Craft in Brighton to name but one - where I will drink draft but I prefer to trust the brewer putting my beer directly into the bottle and drinking as intended rather than trusting some of the so-called pub managers to remember to clean the pipes properly.

I know this is lager snobbery in the same way that many on here don't like the whole 'craft beer' scene but I would rather pay more for a smaller bottle of decent beer than have a pint of something that tastes very artificial. I will now go back to the bottle of Camden Gentlemen's Wit that I have just opened to go with my dinner :drink:

Maybe so when they get home and the missus accuses them of sitting in the pub all day drinking pints, they can deny it, and still be telling the truth?

Nothing wrong with ordering bottled beer in a pub.

There is something inherently wrong in choosing to drink Budweiser however.

I find I quite often switch to bottled ales or Belgian specialty beers when on a session as if I stick to the pints I know where the evening will end up all too quickly.

There are lots of nice bottled beers that you won't find on draught. For instance, when have you ever found this delightful little fella on a tap?

If you trace back the pipes you'll end up next to the urinals

I was told by a night club owner in Leicester Sq it started when Aids came about and the gays drank from bottles because nobdy knew for certain how aids could be transmitted and there was a thought it could be via glasses. Now been proved not so.
