Albion have the edge in the overall head-to-head record with six victories to Wigan’s five, while the two sides have drawn just once.
The first meeting between the two sides on the south coast came in 1988, when Albion beat the Lancashire side 1-0 in an old Third Division fixture.

Wigan boosted their promotion hopes with this victory after four first-half goals at Withdean. The Latics scored twice in the opening four minutes with Jimmy Bullard scoring a long-range volley before Lee McCulloch fired in Wigan’s second. Gary Teale then scored in the 17th minute to put Wigan 3-0 up before Jason Roberts headed home to add a fourth goal. Defender Adam Virgo got one back for the Seagulls ten minutes before the break and Dean Hammond headed in a second in the 83rd minute to complete the scoring.

The Latics started the game brightly and took the lead after 17 minutes when Lee McCulloch capitalised on a defensive error to put Wigan ahead. Albion responded well though and levelled the scores in the 39th minute when Bobby Zamora converted from the penalty spot, after Jason De Vos was adjudged to have impeded Dirk Lehmann. With twelve minutes remaining Micky Adams made an inspired substitution, sending the eventual match winner Lee Steele onto the field. Steele had only been on the pitch for a minute when he rifled the ball home to win Albion all three points.

Albion 1 Wigan 0
Albion secured a superb victory over the high-flying Latics at the Goldstone thanks to Craig Maskell's bullet header just past the hour mark. The Latics went on to win the title that season on goal difference ahead of second-placed Fulham. Meanwhile, Albion went on to avoid relegation out of the Football League on the final day of the season at the expense of Hereford United.
