Plumber advise / recommendation

Hi Guys
South East water have told that we have a leak on the supply pipe leading to the house (on our property) does anyone know anyone who could undertake this kind of work in Eastbourne?

No, the householder/landowner is responsible for the water pipe from the point it enters their land.

Specialist job if you have a long front garden or a driveway that will take ages to dig up, some company's use a ' Mole' machine to put in a new main, ask SE Water if they can recommend a company.

If you have a small lawned garden dig in line with the stoptap in the pavement until you find the leaking main, then call a local Plumber.

It's in the back garden with a lot of problems ...decking, concrete and a big patch of grass

South East policy "Not to recommend anyone" ...thank you very much. They say if you dont get it remedied in 30 days .....wait for it they will do it! doesn't really sound much of a threat but I bet they charge the earth for doing it.

Have they provided the evidence that the leak is on your land ? Lots of horror stories on Watchdog over the years of the water company claiming it was on the householders land but later discoveries proving otherwise.

PS - check if it's covered under your house insurance.

Very unusual if it's in the back garden as water supply is normally laid in pavement outside house with easy access to meter if fitted
Southern Water then walk along the road with a divining rod which they stick to their ear and listen for unusual noises which can indicate a leak
If you have a meter fitted check to see if it is spinning when no water is being used in the house

Have you a meter at the boundary? If so shut your main stop tap off inside and if the meter is still spinning then leak on supply.
How old is the property? Is it terraced?
The age of the property will dictate the material of the supply pipe, I'm guessing a fairly old house as rare for mdpe pipe to leak, so maybe lead. Check pipework below stop tap if possible .
Always check buildings insurance , they may cover it but doubt it.

If pipework mdpe ( blue or black) then worth diggin trial holes and clamping the pipework at each stage to eliminate each section.
Also , check any drains you have on your property as water will usually find its way into these. I've found a few where it's leaking through the wall lining of a drain , and if an old house they used to run the mains in the same trench as the drains to save on digging.

Absolutly this, My Father had a leak on the pipe into his house. The insurance company paid for the digging, mending pipe and re doing part of drive aswell as giving a rebate on monies spent due to leak.

Over the years, I've had a lot of problems with leaks between our water meter and the house (not helped by the fact that the meter is three miles away and the land between the meter has been private agricultural land, under crops and without any means of access).

The reality of the situation has been that I've found it best to work direct with South East Water to deal with any leaks - using their staff to locate the problems and repair the pipes. Yes, they charge, but they do a good job. And I have an insurance policy that specifically covers the repair costs.

Talk sensibly with South East Water and they will give you a leakage allowance that can be used to offset the additional water charges that you'll be racking up.

Do you have a meter?
Do you have a working inside stoptap?
Have you checked the ball valves in the tanks, if you have tanks.
Have you checked toilet cistern(s) .

A customer of mine was told they had a leak on their main to their flat, but I found it was a faulty tank ball valve, the overflow pipe was discharging into the bath waste pipe so it couldn't be seen.
