Brighton – The execution – and perhaps a bit of luck – is all that appears to be lacking for Brighton so far. Up front, they’ve created more chances than any Football League side except Norwich, but also have the second most wasteful attack. At the back, they have allowed the fewest attempts at their goal of any Championship side but only three defences have required fewer shots on average to breach.

Conclusion:

The Albion passing and possession game is extremely effective defensive tactic at restricting opportunities for opponents. But our defence can be breached easily and it is spoilt by wasteful attacks and poor shooting. And there is only average ability to get into the penalty area to create good chances.

I should have looked at the defensive abilities of the clubs.

It would be football suicide to replace Sami Hyypia. All it would do would reduce our strong points and do nothing about our dodgy full backs (especially when Calderon and Chicksen are playing) and failure in the attacking final quarter.

It is not so much the fullbacks are dodgy it is more the system means they are twenty yards further forward. And forwards low on confidence avoid the opposition penalty area.

Is the system getting the most out of the players?

So, essentially, more confirmation that you can't hit the onion bag with a spreadsheet and a probability calculator.

Try telling Tony Bloom and his multi-millionaire team of boffins that...

That's making money spreadbetting, not scoring actual goals on an actual football pitch. The fact is we were one of the lowest scorers last season. The fact is, this season, in the league, our moneyball strikers haven't scored at all and CMS is the only forward that has.

Clearly doesn't tell the whole story as it does not take account of where those shots are taken from.
