Not as good as a full blown surround system, but better than any TV speakers.
Read the threads quoted above, but get yourself to an independent tv shop or Richer Sounds and get some demos. Generally the more you pay the better quality you will get.

Personally speaking the 2 least gimmicky and most used specs are a wireless (bluetooth) sub for easy concealment and bluetooth input to play stuff off your phone/tablet.
