That was when we were Brighton United, precursors to Brighton & Hove Rangers and Brighton & Hove Albion.

The match was actually the first ever at the Dell - and the opening game of the 1898/99 season. Here's another pic:

We were the first and last team to play Southampton at the Dell. Was at the last match but somehow didn't manage to make it to the first.

My great grandad was there

[United consisted of] nine Scots, one Irishman and an Englishman! Some 8,000 spectators - including many Brighton fans who had travelled by special train - saw the Mayor of Southampton start the game. United lost Willie McArthur after only 20 minutes as a result of a kick on the jaw and he was taken to Southampton Infirmary for stitches.

The Saints, with three internationals, dominated the match, but brave goalkeeping by Bullimer kept them at bay. Although losing 4-1, general opinion was that the new team had performed well against the South's strongest combination.

Why has the groundsman marked out a pair of breasts instead of a penalty area in the first photo?

It is actually a pair of buttocks. You can't tell as it is a black and white photo, but he had also mowed the time-honoured phrase "does your boyfriend know you're here?" into the turf.
