Labour are promising test results within a week for cancer patients if they win the General Election. Desperate promises from a desperate leader of a desperate party?

Rather Labour lies than Tory lies i.e. No root and branch re-organisation of the NHS.

Labour have form for this when last in government, setting nice sounding but clinically irrelevant targets.

Have to disagree - when they took charge waiting lists for operations were over six months - private medical companies made a fortune as a result of this. Even when I first worked in the Nhs in 2005 they were still long. When they left office it was 18 weeks.

There is still a lot wrong with the NHS but this is a huge improvement.

We should be aiming for a seven day cancer diagnosis. The UK has a poor record on cancer treatment compared to the rest of Europe.

the one im thinking of in particular was time to be seen by a consultant. it just meant being pushed through to the next part of the system, without materially affecting clinical outcomes. i cant recal the time, it may well be 18wk, which with the operations waiting list either doesnt add up or is subterfuge in the stats. which is the point im making, managment by statistical targets rather than medical need. its great to aim to diagnose a cancer in 7 days, but if the follow isnt any quicker it wont materially affect outcomes.

Really Well the test results of 13 years in power is enough to make anybody sick. Does anybody really take these promises from the win double Milliband and Balls seriously.....surely not.

The proposed 7 day reporting timeline should apply to scan results (eg CT, PET, MRI) as well as blood tests for tumour markers etc; supposedly this will enable the primary healthcare professional (normally your GP) to make an informed decision quicker on what to do next. It's two weeks max from an urgent GP referral to seeing an oncologist. The next real issue to address is the lack of expertise in recognising cancer symptoms (and those of other similarly "difficult" diseases) in the primary sector. Unfortunately, there's only 7 days in a week and fitting in some patient useful CPD when you've Practice and those all empowering Commissioning Body responsibilities taking up days of your time is a challenge and a real example of the conflict between statistical targets (theoretical cost reduction) and medical need.

Rather a Labour commitment than the Tory systematic destruction of the NHS any day of the week.
If we lived in a perfect place nobody would vote Tory.

Oh, another little nugget of intent from Siliband was the plan to give football fans the legal right to 10% ownership when football clubs change hands. I think private industry and businessmen might have something to say about that, along with their lawyers.

They all make promises about popular ideas before elections, and then either drop them or do the opposite after. Haven't you noticed yet?
