It’s obviously a difficult week for us but we’ve been heartened by this fantastic achievement, which has all been done in Jay’s memory."

Today, Wednesday 15th October, marks a year to the day since Brighton & Hove Albion fan, Lance Corporal James Brynin, tragically lost his life in Afghanistan.

In July, a total of 160 army personnel, divided into six teams of three each day, embarked on a mammoth challenge in James’s memory, named ‘To the Bitter End’.
*
Based at their gym in Kandahar, those taking part have covered the distance from their base in Afghanistan to RAF Brize Norton, a distance of 4,563 miles! This has been done using gym equipment, be it a treadmill, bike or rower - along with a number of press-ups for good measure.

The challenge, led by RAF training instructor Sergeant Khym France, is now into its last day, with the top three teams completing the final challenge of rowing 4km, cycling 156 km (in pairs), running 4.5km on an 8% incline, and finishing off with 453 press-ups (one for each British fatality) this evening.

All of the money raised from the event will go to Hounds for Heroes, the choice of the Brynin family, which provides trained assistance dogs to injured and disabled men and women from the UK Armed Forces and Emergency Services.Efrem, James’s father, told seagulls.co.uk: “The support from the Albion, the fans, and from the wider community has been overwhelming and has certainly been of huge comfort to us during these difficult 12 months.

“Another positive has been the tremendous amount of money raised in James's memory. At the last count in excess of £51,000 had been raised – with all monies going to Hounds for Heroes charity – and our target of £60,000 is now within reach. A further £5,000 has also been raised for the ABF and Royal British Legion.
“This challenge from the service men and women in Kandahar has been truly phenomenal, overwhelming in fact, and we as a family thank each and every one of them from the bottom of our hearts. It’s obviously a difficult week for us but we’ve been heartened by this fantastic achievement, which has all been done in Jay’s memory.”
