Albion captain Gordon Greer continues to be one of the club's best value-for-money buys and to lead by example.
He will be 34 in December but there is no evidence that he is deteriorating with age.
In fact, the opposite appears to be the case.
Greer has belatedly established himself as a regular member of the Scotland squad.
The dependable centre-half is the only outfield player not to have missed a minute in the Championship for Albion this season.
Minutes on the pitch is not the only table Greer is topping.
He is also comfortably Albion's leading passer, according to figures supplied by football stats search engine Squawka, based on a range of criteria including the number of successful passes and average length of passes.
Greer's main task, of course, is defending. He has easily won the most tackles (23), made the most clearances (80) and interceptions (28).
Greer, bought from Swindon for £250,000 in the summer of 2010, is out of contract at the end of the season.
It is difficult at the moment to visualise an Albion defence without him.
The back four could be very similar this time next year or radically different, depending on how the rest of the season goes.
Only two of the current eight defenders are under contract beyond next June, Greer's free-scoring partner Lewis Dunk and left-back cover Adam Chicksen.
First choice left-back Joe Bennett is on loan from Aston Villa. Experienced trio Bruno, Inigo Calderon and Aaron Hughes, together with loaned-out Latvian Vitalijs Maksimenko, all have deals expiring next summer.
