Today, I spent £25 on a new Sky remote control.

The old one was shite. You had to MASH the 'select' button in for it to function. The 'Up'button was pretty much a writeoff, and I had to have long, rhythmic, borderline erotic persuasions of the red R button in order for it to eventually consider whether or not to accept my desires to actually record something a bit later.

Twenty-five nicker on something that is expensive, needed, but dull. Its up there with new tyres on the motor - that could've gone towards a decent night out.

So whats the CACKEST thing you've had to buy lately, and deeply resented it ?

£300 on a glass door of my next door neighbour, whilst at uni, plus a 6 hour visit to A&E. If I had got the right door, I would have been simply looking at the A&E visit as the door was made of British oak. Perhaps not even that as my house didnt have a step.

Almost had the same expense but installed Linux on my PC. It found the HDD and recovered everything. Took a while though as the hard drive kept over-heating.

I now have Hard Disc Sentinel on every computer so I should get plenty of warning. That is one of a few depressing purchases I've made.

Lately: £126 for a small strip of plastic that forms part of the bonnet catch mechanism on a Ford Focus, and without which, one cannot open the bonnet to check the oil, screenwash, coolant etc.

The part itself costs in the region of £25, the rest is labour :(

Oh- a couple of hours before I discovered the bonnet catch had failed, I'd spent a few quid on bits for the car that I'd been meaning to do for ages- new mats, cleaning stuff, kit for the boot etc. Then went home full of good intentions to wash & wax it, hoover it out, check all the tyres, fluid levels etc & generally give it some TLC.

I did all but the fluids stuff, & felt quite pleased at my investment: then tried to open the bonnet & discovered that the ******* car was now going to cost me a whole stack more on top of the £40 I'd just spent.

So, that £40, whilst insignificant in the grand scheme of things, is also annoying, given the timing of it in relation the other, necessary spend.

Two weeks ago I got a brand new phone and within a week dropped it, screen smashed......the only people to repair it were LG service repair.....£130

.....to think I laughed off paying a tenner a month phone insurance!

3000kr (about £300) for that tiny rear windscreen washer bit. aparently something inside the light unit was broken so it wouldnt stay in place, so ended up having to replace the whole unit. That sucked.

Also on the subject of phones, my wife had a cracked iphone screen for a while so i gave her the money to get it fixed. two days later she dropped the bloody thing and did it again!!!

car parts could feature heavily in this list. i once had to spend £80 on a small ABS warning light unit because the bulb had blown. common problem apparently, but you had to replace the whole unit. it is possible to replace the 10p blub with soldering iron and suitable tools+skills, but when dont have these tools to hand and MOT due to run out tomorrow, you have to bit the bullet.

lesson learnt, always have your MOT done couple of weeks before due in case theres things you can fix.

It should be remembered though it is free postage and you cannot put money on the pleasure of using the new one and pressing select without risking a broken thumb
