Brighton & Hove Albion women’s manager James Marrs admitted his side were second best in every department following today’s 4-1 defeat at Charlton Athletic.
Albion were 3-0 down by the 22nd minute, before Fliss Gibbons netted what proved only to be a consolation goal just before half-time. The Addicks added a fourth three minutes after the re-start to effectively end any slim hopes of a comeback.Marrs told seagulls.co.uk, “We were second to everything in every department. That sums it up really.
“Full credit to them [Charlton], they deserved the win and were up for it more. Charlton were up for a battle; whatever we had they were up for trying to match it and we looked frightened, which was a little bit puzzling to me - we didn’t look like we wanted to win at all.
“The girls have spoken after the game and they know what went wrong. It’s just a little bit disappointing that none of them had the courage to step up and take responsibility on the day.
“But we can’t dwell on these things and we need to pick ourselves up.”

Despite the defeat, the Albion manager believes the result could be a vital wake-up call if the team plan to challenge at the higher end of the table this season.“There’s a difference between being aggressive and competitive and we were neither today. Marrs also highlighted the quality going forward for Gibbons’s goal - the only real plus point from an Albion perspective on the day.
“We still tried to play and tried to put passages of play together. Our goal was very well worked and we had opportunities to have a sniff in and around their 18 yard box, but unfortunately the final pass was never good enough."
