Who wants a bit of rail disruption this evening ?

Of course you want to be 30 minutes late home !! 3 main issues this evening -

Thameslink service SUSPENDED between Blackfriars/Elephant & Castle and St Pancras due to electrical power problems and overhead wires falling down at City Thameslink station, which has also been shut and evacuated. Lines to be closed most of the evening, best option is heading via Victoria.

Earlier signalling problems (now fixed) at East Croydon still causing congestion due to earlier delays.

Train failure at Redhill, mainly affecting Northbound services but as trains are being diverted via the Fast/Quarry Lines, services might be delayed.

Southern tickets accepted on FGW, London Overground, SWT, Southeastern and Thameslink (where running).

Thameslink tickets accepted on Southern, East Midlands, TFL Buses/Underground, London Midland and Great Northern.

This wouldn't happen in Germany.

My 1 mile cycle to work was interrupted by lots of fire engines and the police.

I rode round them and arrived safely, on time, a couple of minutes after leaving home.

But it was touch and go there for a few seconds.

We "lost" our driver at Redhill southbound and had to wait for another one to arrive on a northbound train... How does that work?

To be fair, everyone in Germany is too drunk to care about anything this month.

Oh, Thameslink issues might not fully be sorted by morning. A train had its pantograph up (what it uses to pick up overhead power) where it shouldnt have, and ripped down the overhead cables. Knocking out the power supply to the entire core stranding a few trains. 2 trains damaged too, so expect some short trains tomorrow morning too.

Major signalling issues earlier were caused by a fire knocking track circuits out south of East Croydon. Was repaired within an hour, but services were already very quickly screwed.

Would have been a driver change, Redhill is used as a changing point. The incoming driver would have been working another service, probably delayed if you had to wait.

Said it before, say it again, that damn franchise needs splitting in two. Even on non-jumper days sarf of the river, the service is always likely to be screwed by some crappy power supply issue norf of the river. Maybe they could call it Thamesnonlink.

Or a better contingency plan to split services during disruption ? The link through central london is incredibly useful, especially when the link to the Great Northern route opens, giving Sussex a direct service to Cambridge, Peterborough, Stevenage and Kings Lynn.

Services need to be immediately halted at Blackfriars or Elephant and Castle for the South and St Pancras at the North, though it all depends on the issue, but plans for all eventualities need to be made.

Totally agree. But one half of that franchise continually brings down the other half. Needs to be a breakpoint so that only one half is affected and the other half can be allowed to operate normally wherever possible. Passengers/customers in the affected half would then only have to wait for the next available scheduled service on the non-affected half. got to be better than the entire franchise reporting delays of laughable proportions shirley?

I presume this is what all the "improvements" to London Bridge (which hasn't had a trouble free day since the August work finished) are intended to achieve. Four years of signal problems and narrow platforms so that a few old grannies can get to sodding Stevenage (unless of course someone jumps at sodding Stevenage). Who the actual fark works at Peterborough and lives in Brighton? And if you do why is the tube to Kings Cross not more attractive anyway where you can pick up a fast comfortable service to Peterborough? 4k a year or more for City commuters to be messed about for four years when they're also putting the most tax in to the subsidies.

Had a meeting in London today - spent 7.5 hours travelling door to door and back again. Could have gone to New York in that time

Glad I'm at home again tomorrow

Notwork Southeast, Failcrap, Failtrack, Railcrap, Notwork Fail. Just a few of the nicknames that have been given to our railways. I remember when I was a lad, and NSE had just been launched, they were putting the logo on the side of trains by transfers. I was waiting for a train at Clapham Junction and noticed that some wag from the depot had put a Notwork Southeast sticker on the side of a unit.

Funnily enough, my train to East Grinstead was bang on time tonight. While we can't go anywhere in a southerly direction, there are some benefits of starting your journey at a terminus station.
