A late equaliser from Sam Vokes was enough for Brighton & Hove Albion to maintain their unbeaten start to the season, as the Seagulls twice came from behind to claim a point at the Amex. Joe Mason opened the scoring just before the hour mark after slotting the ball in from close range. Ashley Barnes levelled for Albion after prodding home Craig Noone’s cross, but it took just 90 minutes for the South Wales side to regain the lead when Peter Whittingham’s strike from distance flew past Peter Brezovan. Vokes, on loan from Wolves, rescued a point in the 89th minute with another finish from inside the box to give Gus Poyet’s side a deserved share of the spoils.

Brighton & Hove Albion edged out the Bluebirds and moved up to second place in Division Two thanks to Bobby Zamora’s 14th minute penalty. Zamora successfully dispatched the spot-kick after Nathan Jones was fouled by Rhys Weston. Daniel Webb could have doubled Albion’s lead just before half-time, but fired his shot over the crossbar. The Seagulls ended the game with a one man advantage as Leo Fortune-West was sent off for two bookable offences in stoppage time. Albion would go on to overtake Reading at the top and claim the Division Two title.

Cardiff City suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat at the Goldstone Ground in 1977, thanks to goals from Ian Mellor and Peter Ward plus a brace from Peter O’Sullivan. The first win in five matches moved Alan Mullery’s team back into the promotion places in the Second Division, and sent 22,704 fans home happy.
