Nothing new here. Anyone earning a sizeable amount will be involved in 'avoidance' schemes to lower their tax liabilities.

The most curious thing..
It's a legitimate avoidance scheme. Where's the issue?

because everyone's got their knickers in a twist over "tax avoidance" and even the HMRC has got in on it, as such schemes proved more popular than expected. meanwhile politicians have been falling over themselves to say how great the UK film industry is with so many films made here in recent years...

Doesn't Ed Milibland want to close all these tax avoidance loopholes when Labour win the 2015 General Election ?

Is it legit? Didn't that Guy Hands Terra Firma chap lose out big time from this very same scheme?

The real issue here is HMRC who are introducing retrospective rules to claim back the tax legally avoided. If Gordon Brown and the Labour Government at the time got the legislation wrong, or the scheme proved too popular, they should just bite the bullet, and introduce new rules for the future, not looking to claw back money that legally avoided being taxed.

Nothing wrong with it.....unless you have morals.

Lets be honest here, if any of us earned a sizeable income, we would all want to keep as much of it as possible especially as the tax rates would be high.

But Guy Hands invested in this and lost out. So in his case it was wrong. Maybe the HMRC now going after the smaller fry?

This really is very annoyingly boring. If you were a high earning and therefore a paying tax payer and had a legal way to manipulate things then I am sure most people would. Therefore on this post I'm done. [emoji106]

Is not possible to do though there will always be ways to reduce your tax bill otherwise corporate Britain would be very unattractive and companies would leave or not come to the UK in the first place. To start with are they going to change the laws so that business owners cannot save tax by withdrawing through Divs and paying less corp tax after deductions for such things as pensions given the huge pension gap that all generations will now face that is the last thing they want to stop!

Corrected for you.

I will, hopefully never see another labour government during my life time

If you die within the 8 months you'll get your wish.

From the article

Tax avoidance is not illegal and there is no suggestion of a criminal offence

Upson's not done anything more dubious than a start up or contractor. Certainly not going to be given the full Lester Piggott treatment. At best guilty of something that some people (but nor all) would consider immoral. Nice to see that Leicester's sister paper to The Argus is on a similar level.

Tax is one of those things that is always going to split the jury. In a Western social meritocracy I would hope the base rate of income tax never exceeds 25% or goes below 15%. We seem to have it right. We, as a group of people need to pay for the things we use as a group of people but tax should never be a disincentive to success.
