However in recent years neither side has dominated the fixture since the pairing came face-to-face for the first in 16 years when they met at the City Ground in November 2002.
Forest were victorious that day, winning 3-2 but in the reverse fixture later on that season Albion triumphed 1-0 thanks to a Paul Brooker goal to claim a first win over the Nottingham side in ten attempts.
It was Albion's nine-game winless streak that stretched from 1980 until the aforementioned 1-0 win in 2003, that gives Forest their better head-to-head record, but since then, both sides have enjoyed an equal amount of success, with the Seagulls edging results with four wins compared to Forest’s three.

Gerry Ryan’s goal in the 12th minute handed Brian Clough’s side their first home defeat in 42 games in a remarkable shock result. During the contest Graham Moseley also saved a John Robertson penalty just before half-time as the bottom of the table Seagulls claimed a famous victory over the European champions. This result sparked a turnaround in fortunes for Alan Mullery’s men and Albion were pulling away from the relegation zone by Christmas.Wednesday 29th September 2004

Adam Virgo turned himself into a cult-hero on the south-coast when he headed home in the dying moments of the 2004 play-off semi-final against Swindon to rescue the Seagulls. The centre-back continued to add to that status the next year when he became a centre-forward, with his goals proving vital to Albion’s eventual battle to safety from relegation in the 2004/05 season. One of those goals came in the form of a winner at the City Ground on a Wednesday night in September 2004, when he powered home a header on 25 minutes in what proved to be the winning goal. The Seagulls battled hard to secure something of a shock result and Mark McGhee’s men were indebted to their keeper Michel Kuipers, who produced some heroics to help Albion to the points.

Both Forest and Albion were harbouring play-off hopes as the 2012/13 season came towards the business end, and the Championship fixture at the City Ground was dubbed a six-pointer. The hosts came out firing and dominated proceedings during the opening 45 minutes only to find Casper Ankergren in inspired form in the Seagulls goal. It was Albion and Leo Ulloa who broke the deadlock after the break when the Argentine striker swept home from close range. However the final ten minutes provided plenty of drama with three goals in eight minutes. Substitute Lewis McGugan struck an equaliser, only for Will Buckley to drill the Seagulls ahead again just three minutes later to put Brighton on the brink of victory. But in a cruel twist of fate, Henri Lansbury’s injury-time effort agonisingly squirmed through the otherwise flawless Ankergren to leave the sides sharing the spoils.
