I'm having issues with my Sat Nav so could someone be so kind as to advise on the best route to Burton avoiding the M6 toll (as I'm a tight arse and refuse to pay it.)

Looking at a map there are three or four options. However not knowing the weight of traffic at rush hour along these various routes I've no idea which one to take.

Cheers

Follow M1 all the way up past Leicester, get off at Junction 22 and follow A511 to Coalville, Ashby-de-la-Zouch and then Burton.

Avoids the dogs breakfast of the M40/M42/M6 Toll Road south of Brum.

NB: A511 is single carriageway all the way so if you do get stuck behind slow moving traffic you will find it difficult to overtake.

What about M42 to Junction 11 then take the A444?

I would avoid the M42 at rush hour, it gets VERY busy in both directions, so much so that they use the hard shoulder as an extra lane.

I have to go to Derby regularly for professional reasons and I have found that the M1 is usually the fastest way of getting there. A grindingly DULL route but there you go.

Then stuck overnight once it's gone to extra time?

That's the one we are using although Google thinks it will take 4 hours but I am a bit further east.

You must be a fair old way east, Google reckons 2 hours 59 minutes for me from Haywards Heath.

I fear that's a tad optimistic in late afternoon traffic, but we shall see.

I haven't done a morning rush hour but evenings it starts backing up from around 4.30PM and doesn't clear until 7.30PM so I have little doubt it is very similar in the morning!
