Peter Ward played for both Burton and Albion

The Bristol City manager started his professional career in non-league football with the likes of Cheltenham Town, Alvechurch and Burton Albion.

Cotterill had an impressive goalscoring record with the Brewers, netting 44 goals in 74 games during his time in Staffordshire.
He then joined top-flight Wimbledon in a £120,000 deal in 1989 and subsequently joined Albion on loan for the 1992/93 season to regain his match fitness following a cruciate knee injury.

In total, he made 15 appearances for the Seagulls before making a permanent switch to Bournemouth for £80,000.

Ken Gutteridge

The late Ken Gutteridge, who passed away two years ago at the age of 83, is a legendary former manager of Burton and guided them to promotion to the Southern League Premier Division in 1974.

He has also been credited for discovering Peter Ward, who later moved to the Seagulls for £4,000 and he joined the striker in making the switch to the south coast as Peter Taylor’s assistant.

Gutteridge continued as assistant to Alan Mullery before reuniting with Taylor at Derby County.Allan Jackson

Allan Jackson arrived at the Albion in 1963 following a successful four-year spell with Bury where he scored 49 goals in 140 appearances for the Shakers.

After a year with the Seagulls, he attracted interest from Peter Taylor at Burton, and had three successful years playing at right-half for the Brewers in the twilight years of his career.

The legendary Albion striker began his career with the Staffordshire side after signing an amateur contract in 1974. He scored 26 goals in his first season at the club, before attracting the interest of a number of Football League clubs.

Brighton’s approach for the player was initially turned down, causing Ken Gutteridge to step down from his post as Burton manager when news of Albion’s interest in the player had been leaked to the press.

In an ironic twist of fate, Gutteridge became one of Peter Taylor’s coaches on the proviso that Ward joined the club.
*
Ward signed on the dotted line for the Seagulls in a £4,000 transfer fee and the rest, as they say is history.
Peter Taylor

Taylor became Burton boss in 1962 and created one of the most successful sides in the club’s history, as they went on to win the Southern League in 1964. A year later he became Brian Clough’s assistant at Hartlepool, then Derby and eventually Albion in 1973.

When Clough left for Leeds after a season of struggle with Albion in 1973/74, he remained with the blue-and-white-stripes for a further two seasons, leading them to a fourth-place finish in the old Third Division in 1975/76.

He left the club in 1976 to reunite with Clough at Nottingham Forest for their most successful period together, winning the Football League title and the European Cup twice. He retired from management in 1982 before being tempted back to manage Derby between 1982 and 1984.
