Mystery surrounds why a plane suddenly changed path, leaving an unusually shaped contrail in the sky this morning.

The strange shape was captured on camera by a member of the public, who noticed it as she left her home in Southsea, Hampshire, at around 7.20am.

The vapour trial suggests the plane turned one way before then going back on itself, with air traffic experts at a loss to explain what caused it.

Teacher Florence Lehmann, who spotted the unusual shaped trail, said: "It's really weird. It looks like the pilot sneezed or fell asleep.

"Somebody said a UFO had been spotted recently in the area and the pilot had tried to avoid it, which I quite like the sound of.

"There was no wind this morning and the plane actually moved trajectory."

A spokeswoman for Nats, the air traffic control company, said she was unable to explain why the plane had apparently changed direction.

She said: "Unfortunately Nats has no knowledge of the purpose of any given flight and we do not identify individual aircraft to members of the public."

Last week a grey-spherical object was photographed in the skies above Portsmouth which some believed may have been a UFO and which the Met Office reportedly said was not linked to the weather.

Somebody phone The Truth now! He and he (or she) alone may have the answer.
