Nice ask - nothing I recommend would probably appeal to any purists of the genre but I'd start with Canned Heat - Best of. John Mayall - especially the album ' Blues from Laurel Canyon'. Captain Beefheart with Ry Cooder on ' Safe as milk'. Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, JJ Cale, Butterfield Band, Zappa.

For the older generation - John Lee Hooker or Robert Johnson
For more modern - Joe Bonamassa or Gary Moore
and special mention for John Mayall

Joe Bonamassa is a more modern Blues player- fantastic musician.

Also The John Mayer Trio (Not Mayer's usual soppy solo crap) are excellent

Rory Gallagher was probably more Rock than Blues - but he did both superbly well.

Go for Irish Tour '74 or Live in Europe to see what a Live Performer he was.

Have a listen to Blues Power on Planet Rock you can download a pod cast from their site this will give you a lot of blues to choose from old and new.

But other than that modern day stuff can't go wrong with Gary Moore, some of Eric Clapton etc. Don't forget the music from the likes of the Stones and of Led Zepplin were built on their experiences of the old blues guys.

Robert Cray is just fantastic. Old-skool, check out T-Bone Walker.
