Brighton & Hove Albion’s under-21s secured their first win of the season with a hard-fought victory over Derby County at the Sussex County FA headquarters at Culver Road. Robin Deen’s strike within minutes of the re-start was enough to give Simon Ireland’s side all three points against the Rams.The game started with a couple of early chances for both sides, and Albion keeper Christian Walton had to be alert to tip away Jamie Hanson’s close-range header from inside the six-yard box.
Jimmy Muitt then had Albion’s first opportunity of the game, when his speculative drive from distance rose narrowly over the upright.
Kwame Thomas was next to test the Albion goal, but his curling strike was cleared wide thanks to a defensive header from Glen Rea.
Rob Hunt looked lively down the Seagulls' left-hand side during the first half, and an exquisite touch allowed him to race into the Derby box and set up Muitt, who shot narrowly wide of the near post.
Albion went close again just before the interval when Paddy McCourt’s free-kick forced a fingertip save from Rams keeper Jordan Mitchell.
The breakthrough came when Muitt played in a superb through-ball into the path of Deen who coolly slotted home past Mitchell.
Derby still carried an attacking threat going forward and Rea made a crucial clearance on the line to deny Tom Naylor from inside the area.
Thomas continued to be a key threat for the Rams in the second half and forced Hunt to make another goalline clearance.
The game became rather fragmented towards the end with Albion defenders Rea and Danny Pappoe entering the book for late challenges, while Hanson also picked up a yellow card for the Rams.
Muitt then almost scored a second Albion goal after weaving his way into the Derby box, but was denied by the outstretched leg of Mitchell and Albion secured all three points.
