"Police have shot dead a 40-year-old man who was threatening a woman with a knife at a house in London, in the first fatal shooting by police in London since the killing of Mark Duggan in 2011.

Several shots were fired during the standoff at Shepperton Road in Islington at around 1am and the man died 20 minutes later while being taken to hospital, Scotland Yard said.

Police had sent a negotiator to the scene at 11.19pm on Thursday following reports the man had broken into a house.

The man and woman involved were believed to have known each other, according to Commander Neil Basu of the Metropolitan police.

The woman was not harmed but was being treated for shock, he said. Photos taken by neighbours show a middle-aged woman in a pink blanket being comforted by a female police officer as she was led away.

Speaking outside Scotland Yard, Basu said the man was pronounced dead en route to hospital at 1.20am."

Couldn't a taser have been used?

A fatal shooting by a trained police officer is extremely rare. We are talking about split second decisions here rather than simply asking if a taser could've been used we need to know all of the facts first. An ipcc would be launched as a course of action.

Maybe a taser wasn't an option due to the distance between man/woman and the police.

If that was the case then the man could have seriously injured the woman before the police had got close enough to deploy the taser.

The police can't win, in these situations, can they? Somebody will always criticise. If they'd been there to shoot the guy yesterday in Edmonton, you'd have wanted them to do so.

This, you reap what you sow, go out with a knife and then start threatening people what do you expect to happen?

Do you have anything like enough information or experience/training to even consider asking if they could have used a taser?

From what I understand it was too far away for the OB to use a taser.

The bloke was holding a woman hostage in a house and the OB were on the street when he started firing at them.

Maybe they couldn't have used a taser, but why fire more than once? Surely all they had to do was disable the man, even the use of rubber bullets might have done

Maybe they could have ticked him with a pink feather duster, why you defending a loony with a knife who was threatening a women? Police don't take the decision to use guns on a whim.

I've seen a few vids on youtube of US police tazing people and it literally does nothing to subdue them. The pain is just a boost of energy when you are high on crack or completely mental. They also have to get within 20ft or something and hope the stinger hits them or then they have some nutter with a knife running after them.

He lived for 20 minutes so, arguably, with a number of live rounds fired, the marksman was a poor shot

Im starting to get pig sick of the f*****g do-gooders in this country. You play by the sword, expect to die by it too. Tazer, rubber bullets ? f**k me.

Maybe we can just whack em round the legs with a wet stick of rhubarb.....that must sting for a minute or two eh Tomandjerry.

Police officers put their lives on the line for others every single day. Absolute heroes in my eyes.
