Bicycle help

My son has outgrown his bike and so is going to use mine, which has sat unused for 3/4 years.
The tyres were flat so I just tried pumping them up but every time I do, the tyre pops off the rim.
Am I missing some arcane secret known only to bicycle repair men, or are the tyres knackered (and if so should I replace the tubes as well) ?

Try pushing the valve up slightly while pumping it up, could be the inner tube trapped under the tyre rim and pushing it off.

Most tyres have a steel wire bead, the bit that sits in the rim (wheel), it would be very unlikely for this to perish.

Some tyres/rims can be not quite the right size for each other, too big or too small.

If the tyre is coming out of the rim when you're pumping it up try this -

- Turn the bike upside down so there is no weight on the tyres
- Pump the tyre up enough to have shape but still moveable, about 5-10psi
- Reposition the bead into the rim if it has come out
- Carefully pump the tyre up some more
- Reposition again if necessary
- Pump the tyre up to your desired pressure (30-40psi)
- Job done!

I did this and now have a functional bicycle.
I said to the boy "there you go" and he replied "thanks but it's too late now, I might go out sunday"
