A new-look Brighton & Hove Albion women side began their season with an accomplished 3-1 victory over newly-promoted Copsewood at the Sussex County FA Headquarters at Culver Road.In James Marrs’s first competitive match in charge of the squad, six of the starting eleven were making their Albion debuts, including Charlotte Gurr, who recently returned to the club from Gillingham.
The Seagulls were on the front foot straight from kick-off, as early chance fell to Gurr, after she ended a sweeping move by shooting straight into the hands of Copsewood keeper Nikki Duncan.
Gurr was involved in the thick of the action again when her dangerous free-kick was almost diverted into her own net by Sarah Harvey.
Albion then stepped up a gear and put the visitors’ defence under a sustained spell of pressure, as Charlotte Owen’s strike from just outside the box cannoned off the crossbar before rebounding to safety.
Duncan was doing her utmost to keep the scores level and made a fine triple save to deny Owen, Charley Boswell and the Kirsty Barton from inside the area.
The hosts finally broke the deadlock in the 37th minute, when Gurr’s in-swinging strike rebounded off the post and fell into the path of Gibbons who slotted home at the far post.
Gibbons then turned from scorer to provider, as her cross from the left-hand side found Gurr at the near post allowing the forward to nod the ball in from inside the six-yard box.
Marrs’s side continued their momentum after half-time, as Gibbons completed a brace after slotting the ball past Duncan from Barton’s through ball straight through the Copsewood defence.
The Midland Combination champions then began to threaten the Albion goal, when Nicola Foskett had their first chance of the game but fired an effort straight at Faye Baker.
They managed to pull a goal back in the 54th minute as a bullet strike from Sarah Rowles from just outside the box flew past Baker into the far corner.
Substitute Leah Williams could then have reduced the deficit to one, as her speculative volley from distance went narrowly past the post.
Rosie Kmita was Albion’s main attacking threat in the closing stages and she managed to pick out Amy Green inside the box but her header went onto the roof of the net.
Kmita made a similar run down the left-hand side moments later and found Gurr with a superb cross, but Duncan produced a fine fingertip save and Albion ran out 3-1 winners.
