Antisemitism on rise across Europe 'in worst times since the Nazis'

"In the space of just one week last month, according to Crif, the umbrella group for France's Jewish organisations, eight synagogues were attacked. One, in the Paris suburb of Sarcelles, was firebombed by a 400-strong mob. A kosher supermarket and pharmacy were smashed and looted; the crowd's chants and banners included "Death to Jews" and "Slit Jews' throats". That same weekend, in the Barbes neighbourhood of the capital, stone-throwing protesters burned Israeli flags: "Israhell", read one banner."

"In Germany last month, molotov cocktails were lobbed into the Bergische synagogue in Wuppertal – previously destroyed on Kristallnacht – and a Berlin imam, Abu Bilal Ismail, called on Allah to "destroy the Zionist Jews … Count them and kill them, to the very last one." Bottles were thrown through the window of an antisemitism campaigner in Frankfurt; an elderly Jewish man was beaten up at a pro-Israel rally in Hamburg; an Orthodox Jewish teenager punched in the face in Berlin. In several cities, chants at pro-Palestinian protests compared Israel's actions to the Holocaust; other notable slogans included: "Jew, coward pig, come out and fight alone," and "Hamas, Hamas, Jews to the gas.""

"These are the worst times since the Nazi era," Dieter Graumann, president of Germany's Central Council of Jews, told the Guardian. "On the streets, you hear things like 'the Jews should be gassed', 'the Jews should be burned' – we haven't had that in Germany for decades. Anyone saying those slogans isn't criticising Israeli politics, it's just pure hatred against Jews: nothing else. And it's not just a German phenomenon. It's an outbreak of hatred against Jews so intense that it's very clear indeed."

What do you think has caused this?

The actions of the Israeli government haven't caused this, as disturbing as they are. They are merely an excuse, a welcome catalyst, for the festering monsters of the far right to attach a warped justification to their ideology. A perfect tonic to their recruitment campaigns. The perverse irony being that the actions of the Israeli government have been ranged upon another people they hate with even venom.

Anti semitism is older than Christianity. Jews have been thrown out of just about every country they've settled in for thousands of years. After the Nazis had a go at wiping them out they obviously decided that they were sick of being persecuted and decided, bizarrely, to do some persecuting of their own.

It's likely the Islamists will one day decide to throw them out of Palestine once more. And round and round goes the bloody great wheel.

Anti-semitism must be condemned and fought hard wherever it rears its ugly head. Also, those making false claims of anti-semitism, such as against the Tricycle in Kilburn this week who refused any involvement with Israeli government funding, will be exposed for the charlatans that they are

I don't hate the Jewish community but what I do hate is the stance of the Israeli government and their justification for blowing up UN sanctuaries. It plays right into the hands of Hamas and their propaganda and their justification for continuing to send rockets into Israel. It is reported that 1800 civilians have died in Gaza, including 300 children yet only 64 Israeli soldiers plus 3 civilians have died. I would imagine most people would question the proportionality of the Israeli response plus the lack of action by other world leaders who seem quick to condemn Putin and his dubious activities.

That said, nothing condones the actions of a small minority of anti-semitics against communities 1000s of miles away from the seat of the Israeli government.

Israel is not allowed to defend itself. Israel has to stand being bombed by tens of thousands of rockets by terrorists. If Israel defends itself then the worldwide anti-Semitism (which is evidently bubbling just under the surface anyway) appears. Many posters on here even think that Israel must put up with being bombed every day, several times a day by an enemy that wishes to exterminate all Jews in Israel.

I'm really rather glad Israel is standing up to the terrorists!

A bus load of Jewish school kids were verbally abused and threatened with violence in Sydney yesterday.

Is anyone surprised? That's what happens when you set up a country for your religion and start persecuting people.

This is what happens when your neighbour wants to kill everyone in your country and you are not allowed to defend yourself when this neighbour attacks you with rockets. Do keep up.

Although there is a clear rise in anti-semitism, it is still nothing compared to the years of discrimination against Muslims.

you should never let discrimination descend into a willy waving contest of who has been the most oppressed.......that is fracked up!

Israel has its missile defence system that is nearly 100% effective. They have been blockading Gaza by land, sea and air for 7 years.

Just why do they feel the need to launch weapons of mass destruction into one of the most densely populated areas in the middle east? Defence? No, that has been covered above, must be genocide then.

it is how you stand up to terrorists
do you try to apprehend the guilty only?
or kill more innocents than the terrorists do?
we had Irish terrorists kill many in a long a bitter campaign
we did not kill thousands of innocents in Belfast in response
we treated them essential as criminals
if we had have taken the 300 eyes for an eye approach
we would never have been able to enjoy the relative peace in Belfast and the mainland
we enjoy now.
