He's still bloody good compared to almost any other midfielder out there but, in his pomp, he really was incredibly close to the top of the game.
The best central midfielder I've ever seen play the game.
Without him, I'm not sure that either Barca or Spain would have hit quite the heights that they have done. For all the attacking flair, you need someone in the midfield who can pass the ball with metronomic precision and make things happen - Xavi has done that better than anyone, for my money.
