righton & Hove Albion’s under-21s beat Worthing thanks to a Jimmy Muitt strike and a Charlie Harris penalty. In front of a 438 crowd inside Woodside Road, Simon Ireland’s side secured victory with a professional display against the Ryman League South team.
After a fairly uneventful opening half-hour, the game sprang into life when Rebels keeper Jack Fagan had to be alert to deny Jason Davis from inside the box.
Luke Kilner then cleared skipper Glen Rea’s header off the line before Corey Heath almost diverted Muitt’s cross into his own net.
Albion broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute when Fagan inadvertently played the ball into the path of Davis, who allowed Muitt to coolly slot home.
The Seagulls doubled their advantage just before the interval as Brannon O’Neill was adjudged to have brought down Davis inside the box. Harris stepped up and converted past Fagan, who had gone in the right direction.
Ireland made a number of changes after the break, with Cameron Wiltshire, Bradley Barry and George Cole all entering the pitch.
Cole nearly made an immediate impact after seeing his strike go over the bar from close range.
Muitt was close to making it three for Albion after Barry almost slotted in the forward, only for the Rebels to clear their lines.
The hosts rallied late on in a bid to reduce the deficit; substitute keeper Harry Doherty had to be alert to save Trevor McCreadie’s free-kick, who also had another effort that forced the Seagulls shot-stopper into action.
Barry continued to look lively after coming on the pitch and forced another fine save from Fagan.
Omar Bugiel also had a speculative effort from distance for the hosts, but the shot went over the upright.
