Signing a striker from the lower leagues

rather than keep searching for a marquee striker for about 2million to 4 million, or a free transfer, or a budget foreign striker that doesnt know the english game, would it be sensible to take a punt on a proven striker from league 1 or league 2 ?
im thinking someone of the 6ft plus mould, big hold up type who can do the nitty gritty and can stand getting bashed about a bit, and get 20 goals a season, Tom Pope comes to mind ?

Would signing someone from abroad for 2/4 million be considered 'budget' then? When you say they wouldn't know the game, do you mean the same way Ulloa didn't know the English game? Or any number of our foreign signing's didn't 'know the English game'?

I'd be very surprised if we weren't looking abroad for players significantly better than Tom Pope that come with the added benefit of being much more cost effective than a player already playing in the English pyramid. Albeit that striker might have the clearly incapacitating disability of not 'knowing the English game'.

Not sure Tom Pope would deliver 20+ for us

cant disagree with what you said there, but for every Ulloa that comes from aborad and does well theres 3 or 4 that cannot adapt to the style of our game and pace etc, just look at that Rodriguez bloke for example, and some of the foreign playes in the ds in the past few seasons

why do you think they went into the development squad? generally free if not all free and brought in to see if they could step up. when they don't they are released - not exactly rocket science

"i think what is pissing Sami off now is theres at least 8 million sitting in the bank from the sale of Ulloa, yet nothing is being done"

Ring any bells? #Contradiction

Have you really nothing better to do than start these threads?

The current situation with Connor Wickham looks inviting, albeit would involve us actually spending money

Gus Poyet has said that Connor Wickham will be shown the door if he doesn't sign a new contract.

Could be a brialliant signing IMO

Couldnt agree more.
The question would lie with whether Gus would do business with us AND the other offers that accumulate for him
