"The Libyan militias are believed to be paid by the government in a country with no national army

At least 36 people have been killed in clashes between Libyan government troops and Islamist militants in the city of Benghazi, reports say.

The attack came as the militants attacked troops in the city centre.

Intense fighting near Tripoli airport killed another 23 people, reports say.

Militias controlling large parts of the country are responsible for Libya's worst violence since the 2011 uprising that toppled Col Muammar Gaddafi, correspondents say.

The US and the UK have advised their nationals not to travel to Libya.

On Saturday, the US evacuated its embassy in the capital, Tripoli, citing a "real risk" because of the fighting."

And therein lies the paradox. The West as a whole wants to see democracy in as many places as possible and as such fascist leaders in Libya, Iraq et al are removed, but what if Islamic fanatics seize control or win a popular vote? You solve this one and you can sleep soundly at night.

And everyone is delighted in Libya at the human rights they now enjoy amongst the total and utter anarchy.....

it's a different flavour of total and utter anarchy.
No one ever confused life under Qadaffi's regime -- and "Islamic fanatics" covers the subject for the bulk of Moamar Q's career -- with a hot and oil-rich Switzerland.

Change as good as a holiday, and all that.
