Balance is all that is required,up to a certain age perhaps a little less emphasis is required on the winning side of things..

Once the kids get past the age of 5 it should be drilled into them about the importance of winning.

This ranking is complete and utter nonsense. Sure, Polish NT is crap but people who think we are worse than Burkina Faso, Jordan or Uzbekistan need to have their heads checked.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

Not the ranking, but the depressing reality that there are still people in this country that think that telling 8 year old children that the scores in the games they play matter is a good idea. What this country desperately needs is to identify talent at a young age. Chucking kids into competitive matches and leagues at a frighteningly young age will not help that, because that is the status quo and what has that achieved? Referees abused left and right, pushy parents trying to run the team so that little Timmy is the star player and the big kids that develop faster getting game time ahead of anyone else, regardless of talent because that is ultimately how you win the league.

Surely anyone with half a brain in their head (which to be fair probably doesn't apply to a few people who've so far posted in this thread) can see that none of the above is going to be conducive to nurturing talent. For starters, young kids need to ENJOY playing football, they should want to spend as much time doing it as they can, and not sitting about at home, playing FIFA or Call of Duty. Playing competitively at a very young age will not do that for 50% of kids, because one side always loses, lose often and you're put off the sport entirely.

No. Young kids shouldn't be getting shouted at on a Saturday morning for not doing what the manager wanted them to do, they should be spending as much time on the ball as possible, doing drills and exercises. The ones that show an aptitude for the sport can be identified and passed into a system where they can be nurtured.

Fully agree with this. As an under 7's coach, if our league was competitive at least 5 of mine would never play. They are the smaller ones and August birthdays etc.

Second place means you lose.

If you come second at the job interview you dont get the job. If you come second in a girls affections you dont get the girl. Life is about winning. If some prcious little brat cant cope with competative sport they can always do knitting or some other activity, as long as its installed into them that what they do is about winning.

NOT being competative is like not having manners, they can learn. They damn well need to learn. Life isn't laid out to accomodate the weakest, cant handle it then tough shit, we progress by challenging ourselves and each other. A world where everybody is "comfortable" is a sad sick illusion. Losing isn't nice, but its how you learn how good winning is.

This is whats wrong with our country in a nutshell.

Thats so wrong as to almost defy belief. Husty is spot on, at that young age its not about the result of the game, or where you finish up in the table. Why on earth would you put that kind of pressure on a nipper ?? At that age its about learning the game, nurturing skills, having an environment where the child is encouraged to try something on the ball and most of all ENJOYING it, not just this win-at-all-costs mentality. There'll be plenty of time for that as the kid gets older, but at that young age, the result of the game they're playing in should be entirely secondary.

I don't think we have a huge problem with the younger kids. England just won the European U17 champs for the 2nd time in 4 years. It just seems we can't pull that talent through to senior level.

A very refreshing response.

A system that enables youngsters to develop their skills is the key to success, not one that causes a low self esteem. First and foremost children should be taught to enjoy playing sport, not taught that they are failures if they can't perform to certain levels.

This isn't China.

Yep. The amount of talent that gets wasted in english football because a foreign player is cheaper or will bring instant success is lamentable. Unless a young player hits the ground running when they get an opportunity in the first team they often start the slippery slope down the leagues. Some make it into the first team of a lower premier league club but then rarely get a chance for England.

The players that do get straight into the first team of a top end premier league club as a youngster then get fast tracked into the England squad. Many then get their first cap far too early, raising expectations of them, and then get dropped after a few bad games for England.

This is why too many English players don't have the experience/motivation/skill to play international football.

Or.......maybe if you learnt the real structure the FA get kids to follow you may not just have a stab in the dark at some hyperbole.

The FA has plenty to change but your opinion is no better than a Sun Sport headline

Everything that is wrong with this country someone else quoted, totally agree.
Tell them not to compete tell that that winning means absolutely nothing, tell " little Johnny " he's a loser but just as good as the boy that won , I'm sure he will believe you ha ha !!
Strange how kids get so upset when they see their team lose at a cup final etc , but hang on just tell them it's the taking part that counts and nothing else. Unbelievable PC drivel !!!!

my response in the first reply was and still is correct,we wish not to create aggressive losers who cannot cope with defeat either, yes losing does hurt, but not everybody can win, there will always be losers,it really is in the taking part that counts..

This modern society we live today has one problem, everybody has to win,it simply is not possible..

All the chest thumping you seem to want has got us exactly where we are today. A second rate footballing nation.

Quality is what we need. The Brazillians were full of passion this WC. Did you see how they roared their national anthem GRRRRRRRR! So proud, so passionate!!! 7-1

Not sure where you coming from with your PC nonsense?
