Did southern soul ever exist? And if so, did it come without a big fat chip on its shoulder?

Not as such although many of the 80's British Soul bands were Southern based.

Yes Southern Soul as a style does exist, Unlike Northern Soul a term first used by Dave Godin (from Kent) See the BBC programme for explanation of how NS got it's name.

Southern Soul describes Soul music recorded in the Southern States of America. Usually a mixture of Country and Soul Music styling, Quite often ballads but not exclusively, as more up tempo examples have been picked up In the northern soul scene. Famous Studio's that pumped out many classics of the genre include Stax, Goldwax & Hi in Memphis, Fame & American in the Muscle Shoals Area, Miami had the Criteria Studios and New Orleans had Marshall Seehorn & Allen Toussaint with their Sea-Saint Studio.

Famous records that crossed to POP were

Percy Sledge - When A Man Loves A Woman
Dorothy Moore - Misty Blue
Al Green - Tired Of Being Alone
William Bell & Judy Clay - Private Number
Lee Dorsey- Working In A Coal Mine
Otis Redding - I Can' turn you lose
Otis Redding - Dock Of The bay
Wilson Pickett - Mustang Sally
Arthur Conley - Sweet Soul Music
Clarence Carter - Patches

Records that are both Southern Soul & Northern

Jams Barnett - Keep On Talking
James Carr - That's What I Want To Know
and many more

Southern Soul has it's own Yahoo forum for the real devotees of the genre, of which I'm not a member but that doesn't stop me occasionally peeking in, just like NSC.
