Proven Players not getting a contract this season

With FFP coming in there are obviously a lot of agents playing a waiting game this transfer window to try and keep their clients wages up. Add to this the 25 man squad deadline from the Premier League and there is the possibility of some fairly decent players either sitting on their arses or looking for some bargain loan deals in the next few weeks.

With the game of musical chairs that is going to go on in the last few days, is it possible/likely Koosh, Orlandi and some other proven players end up without a seat and have to re-think their options. (And may have missed it, but did Will Hoskyns get a deal from Barnsley ? )

When is the deadline for the 25-man squad? Surely it is after the transfer window shuts, which would see that particular game of brinkmanship not be played out until September.

I think this is the exact reason we haven't signed many yet.

Agents will be encouraging both free agents and those considering moves to wait as long as possible. They need to drive the best deal they can obviously but under FFP most clubs are going to try and be as frugal as they can.

I expect to see some movement next week but the majority of business will be late in August before the window shuts.

That's for Premier League clubs, isn't it?

Its a new age of football. Almost like playing poker. Agents want to hold out for the best deals but don t want to wait to long either in case they miss out all together. Some clubs are prepared to wait longer than others as well. Those with parachute payments can splash the cash a bit quicker. Clubs like ours would prefer to wait. If we offered contracts to players say on the 1st of July on 10k a week and we snapped up 6 signings we would end up paying in wages an extra 300k before the 1st game. On the flip side we end up signing players who have not had a full pre season and can not hit the ground running.
The other thing to consider is PL squads as there are some good deals to be had if you wait
Trust TB and the board to do what is right

The players who are holding out for the best deal they can get will be players not currently under contract (contracts expire end of June). Doesn't that mean they are free agent and so not restricted by transfer deadlines? For these players it becomes how long they can stand to be unemployed, whereas while the clubs aren't necessarily limited by the window deadline, they are limited by how long they are willing to chase a player/go without that position being filled/covered.

The signing of players late in the transfer window to save wages not necessarily a club thing but originates from some fans.

The more likely reason for waiting, as demonstrated by Palace last season, was that they rushed out and signed a lot of players and found that there were better players available later in the transfer window and then brought in even more, found that their squad was too big and had to loan out some that were on their books which still costs them some money if the club they go to doesn't pay 100% of the wage and pay a fee to loan them equal to any transfer fee that they parent club may have paid.

There will be some good players out there to be had, those that will be displaced from PL sides as they recruit more players from abroad, and this could casuse a cascade effect down the leagues. Buy or recruit too early and you could be left with a weaker squad than may have been achieved with the budget you have and your competitors may pick up those better players and therefore do better than you in the upcoming season.

it's all about knowing when to play or to wait and try to hold your nerve. (if only we had a poker player who could do that effectively)

Good point. It means that the effective 'transfer window' could run even longer as the players out of contract see how long they are prepared to wait before dropping their demands

Interesting times ???

Surely all of this waiting is total nonsense!!

You either know who is available, what he wants, if he will sign etc. or you don't?

You can't just wait to see who is left at the end of the window. The scouting dept will have their list and you go after them, offer what they are worth to you and hope you get them. If their agent advises him to hang tight then he was obviously not the player you should have as his motivation should be to play, do well and earn a living.

If a player waits then he is obviously only after the money!

I understand we all want to earn the maximum we can but we are talking about players earning thousands per week already here!!

Also on the flip side, we will have played 5 league and 1 cup game by the end of August. 15 points and a cup place theoretically could have been played for with a weakened team.

A sensible post at last. Thank you

I am a chess player, and I'd say get the spine of our side in early (keeper, covering defender, central midfielder, striker, left back in a 4-3-3) and strong, and worry about the peripheral players, wingers, right backs later.

The extent we have done this is arguable? Playing poker, I might bet to fill a straight or a flush. Odds say I would lose. Thats seems to be where we at (Poyet mainly). Two pairs to a full house would be better!

PS: I want a stopper centre half. This may not be fashionable? I also want us to sign Stephen Ward as I think he is good for a few goals as well.

I think we have to fight for every point from the first minute. It is this season and I have bought a season ticket banking on we will we cure our home game blues.
