Manchester is entrepreneurial hot spot of the North
High level of new businesses recorded in South Yorkshire, the Midlands and Scotland
British entrepreneurs created a record number of new businesses in 2013, according to new figures from StartUp Britain announced today/January 27.
Research from the national enterprise campaign shows 526,446 businesses were registered with Companies House, beating the 484,224 businesses recorded in 2012, and 440,600 in 2011.
Top performers on the regional entrepreneurial map according to post code include Greater London with 136,939 businesses registered beating the rest of the country by far - with its nearest rival Birmingham at 16,281 and Manchester at 11,765.
Emma Jones, co-founder of StartUp Britain said: “We’ve been looking at these figures carefully for three years since the campaign began and it’s clear the UK’s start-up community is growing year-on-year.
“These figures are raw and hot off the press but the new regional statistics reveal a power house in the South East and London – which is what we were expecting - but there are also impressive pockets of entrepreneurial activity in the North West, South Yorkshire, the Midlands and Scotland.”

Data measured by postcode. BN postcode extends from Littlehampton to Pevensey including whole of Lewes district. Was the population denominator measured on the same basis?
Remember many 'business start-ups' are people made redundant and unable to get secure employment.

A postcode is 6 digits, why pick the first 2 when it could well have used the 3rd, isolating Central Brighton for example

It takes very little effort to register a company and many are registered by holding companies for sale as off the shelf companies.
The amount of companies registered is no measure of success at all - sensible questions would have been, out of all those registered how many are actually trading and of those how many are trading successfully. An utterly pointless bit of research.

Correct, or how many people are these companies employing. How many of these jobs are at zero hour contract, minimum wage.

It is a fair measure as it compares apples with apples ie same measure for each town
House price increases have put B&H 2nd behind London providing again supporting the statistics

Rubbish - so if a certain town / city happens to have a company ( or more than one ) that registers company names for off the shelf purchase they are suddenly successful ? Of course not.

it might be apples and apples, but those apples are merely company addresses registered with companies house. its pretty meaningless and doesnt really say how many businesses are being formed at all - one business might setup several Ltd companies, another might be a sole trade with no Ltd registered. be more interested to see some stats from local councils on business rates or from HMCE on NI contributors.
True. And I was reading recently that there has been a big increase in companies not employing people directly, which in turn has seen a sharp increase in former PAYE employees moving over to self-employed status and limited companies etc.
