something along the lines of the Nokia Lumia 1020, anyone got this?

Or recommend any other phones with a good camera?

Not the 1020 but our son has the 520. Rated highly, good value and a decent camera.
Not as intuitive to use as an iphone, but then it costs a fraction of that of an iphone.

Nokia phone + Windows OS = recipe for disaster. Both really lagging behind their respective competitors.

Galaxy S4 Zoom might be a good shout for you. Camera may only be 16 megapixels but has 10x optical zoom and you can get it with a free tripod (if you're that way inclined..) here.
