Play-off rivals Reading were up next at the Amex and the Seagulls were seemingly on course for a repeat of their 1-0 cup victory back in January. Chris Gunter’s comical own goal had put Albion ahead but Gordon Greer’s second-half dismissal for two bookable offences gave the Royals the impetus.
Royston Drenthe then fired in an equaliser with 26 minutes to play, however Oscar Garcia’s men showed plenty of valour and commitment to hold out for a richly deserved point.
The Seagulls’ form and play-off hopes both improved over the next two games with back-to-back 2-0 wins. Firstly, Albion despatched of big spenders Queens Park Rangers at the Amex thanks to two late goals from Leo Ulloa and*Stephen Ward.
Off the back of that success Oscar’s men put in another determined and clinical display at the Reebok Stadium as Will Buckley’s excellent brace secured more vital points.
But just as the play-offs were looking a more likely proposition, Albion’s results tailed off at the back end of March as they suffered three consecutive losses without scoring a goal. Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough both left the Amex with 2-0 triumphs while a last minute goal at Hillsborough continued the Seagulls’ torrid run at the ground and saw Sheffield Wednesday sneak a 1-0 win.
