Fed up with Firefox thread

Mine seems to take forever to get started in the morning (bit like its user before anyone else says it). Erudite and articulate views on:-

  • How can I make it go faster (it is set to automatically load updates).
  • Your alternative browser recommendations.
  • Whether turning it off and turning it back on againgwold help.

Over to you sages of the board,

Third vote for Chrome. I use IE at work and it is painful compared. Cannot comment on Firefox as do not use it.

I'm a Chrome user and have been for ages. But lately, I've found Chrome to be the memory hogging, sluggish one. I downloaded the latest version of Firefox and it is way quicker and crashes far less.

What system are you using?

Chrome is starting to annoy me now as it often crashes for no apparent reason or the Shockwave plug in decides to randomly screw up.

Over to you sages of the board,

Take a look at your Firefox plugins. These don't update automatically, but if you check under the Tools Addons section, it will take you to a page that checks these for you and you can update them from there. Whilst you are there decide if you really need or won't to use them all and see if it makes a difference, when some are disabled.

This. Chrome is much quicker than IE (and FF) but it is definitely far less stable in my experience. Obviously though, this won't go down well with the IT fashion police on here who insist IE is rubbish.

For years MS and IE were lambasted, criticised for being slow, shite, and even accused of invading our privacy. MS were the worst company in the world for controlling everything, tying us up in their OS, their browser, their World.

Mac had Safari, it is even available for Windows, but it's a bit shit, and of course Apple are now persona non gratis with regards their general modus operandi.

But then along came Google, and now they are cleaning up, they have your passwords, they know where you are, what you like, where you've been and where you're going. They control the development of mobile communication on phones, tablets, even in cars, on fridges and stereo systems amongst others. They have their own OS, their own software, they have PCs tied into their OS, their browser, and their apps. GoogleAds infest every corner of the web, they KNOW what you like, and keep on telling you so with more judicious adverts on websites, wherever you go. There's Gmail, there's Google Docs, they have us by the short and curlies. And people still want to use their browser?

Opera and FF profess to be independent, free and not for profit, as well as safe and speedy, think I'll stick with them.

I've moved from Firefox to Chrome and haven't looked back.
I moved from Firefox to Chrome, and as well as it crashing a lot, Chrome wasn't colour managed. So I moved backed to Firefox, and I've got no problems with it.

Shockwave CONSTANTLY crashes in Chrome, it's really irritating.

A lot of the problem with speed comes down to the websites rather than the browser. As broadband speeds get quicker, people are putting more memory-sucking content on their sites and often have poorly written code. Also, the slowest loading parts of pretty much ANY site are the adverts, which come from a different server and often contain videos.

Safari for Windows is not to be used by anyone with any concern for security; as it hasn't been updated in 2 years and at last count had about 90 vulnerabilities that were fixed in the Mac version since.

Yes I often find this issue with porn sites.

Adblock Plus, allow the non-intrusive ads option and either turn it off fully on sites that you want to actually get money from ads (e.g. here) or run it with everything off and just whack all the video ones. Video and/or "talking" ads are utterly obnoxious.

Chrome is the best of the Big Three. If you're looking for something a bit less well known then look no further than Maxthon - http://www.maxthon.com/

Having a go on that now, not too bad so far. Doesn't seem to fully integrate with LastPass but that's not the end of the world
