Our man in Germany talks Hyypia

Too often during the Bundesliga season just finished, he seemingly failed or lacked the ability to motivate his side at pivotal moments. Hyypiä’s kind nature makes him appear more of a friend than a manager, something that may have hindered him. His tactical knowledge is growing, although he has a conservative tendency, and his naivety was surprising for a man of his footballing experience. His decision to rest his favoured front four in a league game against newly promoted Eintracht Braunschweig cost him three points, while vocalising his desire for clarification about his position to the press seemed youthfully unwise.

Mmmm...

After one Latin-American cabaret and a Spanish affair, Brighton are in need of someone calmer and with less of an ego.

Slightly odd comment, given that those were some of Oscar's qualities.

Good article. Does raise some potentially worrying flaws in his style though.

I'm not worried at all, I'm sure he's had a very steep learning curve in short tenure as a manager. if he doesn't learn, that's when we should worry.

Another gamble, but feel better about Hyppia than Garcia given the experience he has had in English football.

Seems Mr Bloom wants the new glamorous shiny thing rather than the tried and tested again.

Lets hope we have found a gem.

He doesn't paint a perfect picture of him does he.

"he seemingly failed or lacked the ability to motivate his side at pivotal moments."

"His tactical knowledge is growing, although he has a conservative tendency, and his naivety was surprising for a man of his footballing experience."

This sort of thing is often difficult for somebody moving directly from playing, to managing, a squad of players. He was having to manage players who were his team-mates month previously.

Working with a completely new set of players, who don't know him personally, is unlikely to see the same kind of issues.

so, from different articles we've heard that:

1. Hyypia struggled to change games where plan A wasn't working - worryingly like Gus / Oscar at times.
2. Hyypia was unable to motivate the team at key points - Gus v Palace, Oscar v Derby.
3. Hyypia often spoke about problems (too honestly) with the press - like Gus
4. Hyypia at times was too friendly with the players - Dean Wilkins?
5. He tends to be conservative - defensive? - both Oscar and to a lesser extent Gus were criticised for this.

Let's hope he's learnt a lot from the stint at BL then, eh?

Gosh that really doesn't paint him in a great light does it? It makes me wonder what Hyypia said to Bloom to make him want to take a risk on him. At the present time it seems a much riskier appointment than Oscar (who for all intents and purposes was a success at his previous appointement).

We're loose! It's beginning to sound like the cat we got from Raystede. She was the most loving, affectionate thing when we went to look at her, loved being picked up etc. Once we got her home she would go nuts if you ever tried to pick her up. She pulled an absolute blinder at 'the interview' but turned out to be a bit of a disappointment in the long term (see also Garcia, Oscar).

According to a poster on the BBS:

'When he took over as team manager at Leverkusen he was working alongside someone else who was responsible for coaching. It was during this period that Leverkusen did quite well. As soon as Hyppia took sole control it all went to shit pretty quickly'

(That coach being Sascha Lewandowski, who is now Leverkusen's manager)

Here
A cautionary article which underlines the need for Hyypia to appoint a no. 2 whose strengths are his weaknesses and vice versa. Hopefully he has learnt a bit about himself at BL and can see the need for a complementary appointment as well as someone who can help him to recruit the right kind of players for next season. It's far too early to start dismissing Hyypia out of hand for gods sake!!

Oh come on, surely we all already knew that although he is a seasoned campaigner as a player, he has comparitively little experience at managerial level. As the article says, all we can hope for, is that he is a quick learner.
