Albion internationalists - a remarkable season

2013-14 has been a pretty remarkable season for Albion in terms of players being capped by their country. Ignoring players on loan, we had 4 players (Greer, El-Abd, Maksimenko and Crofts) win a total of 16 full international caps. This number would surely have been higher if it wasn't for injuries during the season to Crofts and Bridcutt (and maybe CMS). The only previous seasons when we have had fully-contracted players earn more senior international caps have been 1980-81 and 1981-82 (when we were, of course, in Division One).

If you wish to include players on loan, we had Stephen Ward and Craig Conway win a further 5 caps during the season.

It is an even more successful story at younger age groups, with an incredible total of 41 caps being earned by our youngsters. The full details (if my research is accurate) are as follows:-

Notes: 1 Maksimenko's stats do not include a start he made for Latvia against Yeovil in a friendly in November 2013.
Notes: 2 Ovenden earned further caps for Wales, but after he had been released by the Albion.

Congratulations to each of the players involved, and also to our recruitment department. Long may it continue.

Yeovil v Latvia? WTF?

Thinking about it...was Gary Johnson once manager of Latvia? Or Skonta Riga at least.

Yes - from 1999 to 2001. When Maksimenko went on loan to Yeovil during 2012-13, he was re-united with his former tutor, as he took coaching seminars from him in Latvia as a 13-year-old.

Great work, was wondering just this the other day.

I assume you haven't included Lingard's start against Wales on 19th May as the season was over and he was no longer ours?

Wtf is an 'internationalist'? Is it something to do with Americans fighting in the Spanish Civil War?

Other than that.....great stats and great research.
If we can hang on to our kids and develop them rather than having them poached by the PL academies with the backing of the FA we have a bright future.

Good work AZ. Thanks for that. Didn't know about the Icelandic duo or the Gary Johnson connection with Latvia. Do we have some conncection with Iceland then?

I'm not sure how those two signings came about - I presume we either have a scout who works in that region, or who has a contact within Icelandic football.

We released a youth international? when was the last time that happened?
